A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself, goes a popular saying. It makes perfect sense to look after your pets in the best way possible.
One of the things that owners worry about is their pet’s health. With prevention always being better than cure, scheduling early detection programs are the best methods of evaluating your pet’s health. It is precisely because your pets cannot tell you how they feel, that they need such evaluation regularly to rule out anything before it becomes serious.
Early detection program is the name given to a series of tests that cover every aspect of your pet’s health.
It can include the following tests:
Heartworm disease: A parasite called Dirofilaria immitis, causes the heartworm disease in dogs. In the initial stage, the symptoms are mild and limited to an occasional cough. But later, the symptoms get severe and include high blood pressure and breathing problems. Heart failure can occur if untreated at this stage. Blood tests can detect heartworm disease in the initial mild stages and treatment can begin early if found.
Diabetes check: Symptoms of diabetes can be missed too in early stages. Sometimes diabetes is only detected when the high blood sugars have already damaged other organs like kidneys or heart. Regular screening for blood sugars and other labs can help monitor and prevent serious damage.
Test for arthritis: Arthritis can cause severe pain and limit movement of your pet. It can be very difficult to manage. The quality of life of the pets can be severely affected if this is not detected early. Since your dog does not complain about the aches and pains, you may miss the early symptoms of arthritis as well. An early detection program can provide more comfort and make movement easier.
Cancer detection: Studies show that over 50% of dogs develop some kind of cancer after the age of 10. An early detection program can check for lumps and any other suspicious growths that can turn cancerous. Treating these in the initial stages would give your pets a great quality of life.
Thyroid evaluation: Thyroid conditions are treatable and pets can live a full life if detected in the initial stages.
Kidney evaluation: Kidney failure is the leading cause of death in dogs and cats. Because the symptoms of kidney problems do not show up until the last stage, it can be difficult to treat at later stages. If evaluated regularly with the preventive checks, dogs can be treated and can lead normal lives.
With routine blood tests and other physical examinations, such detailed programs are the best way to evaluate and protect your pet’s health.
